GAIKA | Art and Technology: Architects Of A Decentralised Existence? | IRELAND'S EDGE
No items found.
How can new forms of art address injustice, wealth and power? Critically acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Gaika speaks with Síobhra Quinlan about his work with GKZ, Nine Nights Collective, The Spectacular Empire, and his NFT collection in collaboration with Voice, ‘Live From War Island.’ In considering technology as a tool to be ethically and creatively harnessed by the Artist, how can such a tool be leveraged for liberation, empowerment and expression by both the individual and the collective? This discussion will explore decentralised platforms for underground artists, new forms of artist ownership and audience engagement, and ways in which access to technology can foster community in both our virtual and physical worlds.

Altered States: The New Wave of Psychedelic Research | Dr Roberta Murphy | Ireland’s Edge
No items found.
Humans have experimented with psychedelics for thousands of years, and in the past half century they have often been seen as one of the most controversial forms of recreational drugs. Partially because of that, research about their uses in the treatment of mental health care has often been restricted, meaning we still know comparatively little about their effects on neuroscience and psychiatry. Dr Roberta Murphy is a psychiatrist with the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, where research scientists have been pioneering clinical trials of psychedelics. In December 2021 she spoke with Ireland’s Edge curator Nuala O’Connor.

When Data Gets Personal | David Kenny | Ireland's Edge
No items found.
Ireland will again come under huge pressure to be at the very forefront of regulating privacy for all of Europe and then really for all of the world.' We live in an age of data. From our messages to our location, our search histories to our spending, we hand over much of our most private information to Big Tech companies, for whom that data has become one of the most valuable commodities on earth. Because many of those companies have their corporate headquarters and data centres in this country, Ireland has found itself at the centre of European debates about the regulation of privacy. At Ireland’s Edge in Dingle I spoke with Dr David Kenny, Associate Professor of Constitutional Law at Trinity College Dublin, about the legal debates behind the dizzying world of data.

COP On! Can The World Still Avoid A Climate Catastrophe? | Dr Michael Dorsey | Ireland's Edge
No items found.
Can the world still avoid climate change catastrophe? In the past year both wildfires, floods, and droughts have highlighted the perilous state of the global environment, and the destabilising effects of man-made climate change. The last seven years are the warmest since modern records began, and unprecedented extreme has been wreaking havoc across the globe. World leaders agreed to more action at the COP26 summit in Glasgow last year, but is it all too little too late? Dr Michael K Dorsey is an energy investor and environmental scientist who has been prominent in global environmental politics since the Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro in 1992. He has served as a Director of the Sierra Club and is a member of the Club of Rome. Thanks to the support of the US Embassy we were delighted to host him at Ireland’s Edge in Dingle, where he spoke to Muireann Kelliher.

The Sadness and Absurdity of Death | Séamas O’Reilly on Memory, Loss and Place | Ireland’s Edge

"Memory can be so shaky and strange, and it can be quite overwhelming." We are by memory inspired, as the writer Séamas O’Reilly talks to Christopher Kissane about his award-winning book ‘Did Ye Hear Mammy Died’. Séamus is a columnist with the Observer, and a frequent commentator on culture, politics, and parenting. His book is a memoir of his childhood in Derry, exploring his memories of his late mother, his relationship with his father, and the experience of growing up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. The day after this studio interview was recorded Séamas took the Ireland's Edge stage in Dingle for another very rousing and heartfelt discussion with Christopher Kissane, this time in front of a live audience. You can listen to that wonderful conversation on Ireland's Edge - The Podcast: https://bit.ly/3HC1OZI Both conversations were captured in December 2021. From the edge we get a different perspective.

FeliSpeaks | THEY | Ireland's Edge
FELISPEAKS
'The tried to bury us, but they didn't know were seeds.' Felicia Olusanya, known as FeliSpeaks, is changing the face of poetry in Ireland. A Nigerian-Irish poet from Longford, she began performing at poetry slams and spoken word events while a student in Maynooth, where she now lives. FeliSpeaks’ work confronts issues of identity, race, gender and more in a strikingly individual style. Her poem ‘For our Mothers’ will be featured on the Leaving Certificate curriculum from 2023, and in 2020 she was commissioned by RTÉ to write and perform her poem ‘Still’, a reflection on Ireland’s experience of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Ireland's Edge - The Podcast, she speaks with Christopher Kissane about the inspiration and story behind the spoken word piece, the unique emotional power of poetry, and why she is uncomfortable with being labeled and activist.

Can We Fix It? - The Irish Housing Crisis | Orla Hegarty | Ireland’s Edge
No items found.
"We do have solutions." How did the Irish housing system reach breaking point and can we fix it? The results of Irish housing policy have created a crisis that reaches into every community and region in the country. It increasingly blights the lives of multiple generations. It undermines and conflicts with many other national priorities and strategies. How has it got to this point and what will it take to ameliorate? Orla Hegarty, Assistant Professor, School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, University College Dublin, sits down with Muireann Kelliher to discuss how our housing system became so broken, and what we can do to fix it.

What Hope For The Union? - The Guardian's US Editor John Mulholland On America | Ireland's Edge
No items found.
"It’s not a country that seems any happier than it was four years ago." It has been an extraordinary few years in American news. The surprise election of Donald Trump eventually gave way to his impeachment, his defeat, and then to the unprecedented violent assault on the US Capitol. Mass shootings and police brutality have prompted sustained protests against racial injustice. Heatwaves, wildfires and floods have highlighted the catastrophic impact of climate change. And the worst pandemic in over a century has led to millions of American deaths. All of this amidst a toxic cultural and political divide that seems to grow ever wider. Covering it all has been the Guardian’s US editor John Mulholland. In December 2021 he spoke with Ireland's Edge Curator Muireann Kelliher about the key stories and events of the recent past, the pressing issues of the present, and the uncertain and challenging road ahead.
