This week on Other Voices: The Murder Capital, ØXN, Julie Byrne & KhakiKid

March 5, 2024

The opening episode of Series 22 brought us epic performances from CMAT, Mick Flannery, The Joy and Lucy McWilliams, and Episode 2 is set to be another brilliant display of Irish and international talent! 🤍

We're back for Round 2 this week in beautiful Dingle, where St James' Church is brimming with excitement for The Murder Capital, ØXN and Julie Byrne's sets. Meanwhile, KhakiKid makes his IMRO Other Room debut over in our brand new WAVE venue.

THE MURDER CAPITAL

The Dublin rockers return to the spiritual stage of St James' Church after their thrilling OV Home show at the Guinness Storehouse back in 2022. Armed with a brooding setlist full of anthems from their chart-topping recent sophomore album Gigi's Recovery and 2019 debut When I Have Fears, the quintet conclude their performance with a defiantly moving tribute to the late Shane MacGowan. Taking on The Pogues' version of 'I'm A Man You Don't Need Every Day' acapella, the lucky audience in the Church were left spellbound by the brief but emotionally charged cover.

ØXN

If you missed doom-folk supergroup ØXN's Vicar Street show this week, never fear! You can watch the quartet's breathtaking St James' Church set, featuring singer/keyboardist/guitarist Katie Kim, drummer Eleanor Myler of experimental rock band Percolator, and two cornerstones of the Mercury Prize nominated band Lankum (Radie Peat and unofficial fifth member and producer John 'Spud' Murphy). Performing tracks from their October 2023 debut album CYRM, released on the iconic Claddagh Records label; their brand of unsettling, dark soundscapes has never been seen before.

JULIE BYRNE

Hailing from Buffalo, New York with but an Irish grandfather (of course), the searingly powerful Julie Byrne makes her Dingle debut this week. The artist is one of contemporary music’s most astonishing singer-songwriters. July 2023 saw the release of her new album, The Greater Wings, which was a collaboration with a beloved friend and former lover, who tragically passed away before the LP was completed. The resulting body of work pays tribute to the 33-year-old's grief with breathtaking delicacy. St James' Church was captivated by every moment of her set, don't miss it!

KHAKIKID

Dublin alt-rapper Abdu Huss, aka KhakiKid, electrifies the IMRO Other Room in our new WAVE venue, bringing along producer/artist Chameleon and Louis Younge of Bricknasty for his action-packed performance. Diving into singles from his sand bebé and Elevator Music EPs, prepare to get on your feet for this one. KhakiKid's boundless charisma is undeniable - his star is firmly on the rise for 2024.
