This week on Other Voices: Picture This, Sekou, Bricknasty, Cardinals, Niamh Regan & Wallis Bird

March 11, 2024

We're heading back to Cork for the second edition of Other Voices: UCC this week! 💛 Picture This, Sekou, Bricknasty, Cardinals, Niamh Regan & Wallis Bird bring their songs and stories to the Aula Maxima, Honan Chapel and Glucksman Gallery for Episode 3 of Series 22.

Last September, the Other Voices team gathered in Cork for the second time to Bring It All Back to UCC - where OV founder Philip King first fell in love with music as a student. Our grá for the People's Capital is fully on show in Episode 3 of Series 22, where chart-toppers Picture This performed alongside Sekou, Bricknasty, Niamh Regan, Wallis Bird and Cardinals.

PICTURE THIS

Athy-formed pop band Picture This bring their hits to the Aula Maxima in UCC this week, featuring tracks from their upcoming album Parked Car Conversations. The Kildare quartet have amassed over 400 million total streams, selling out stadiums including a five-night stand at Dublin’s 3Arena, headlining Electric Picnic’s Main Stage twice. The special stripped back set included a crowd singalong of their 2015 viral hit 'Take My Hand', after they treated thousands of students to an impromptu acoustic session on the famous quad earlier in the day.

SEKOU

BRIT Rising Star and BBC Sound of 2024 nominee Sekou made his Irish debut in with us at UCC, wowing the crowd with his soulful, ageless vocals. At just 19, the UK artist released his debut EP last year, with Episode 3 seeing the talent deliver an incredible version of his first ever single 'Better Man'. He's set to reach global stardom over the coming years; we're thrilled Sekou made his TV debut with Other Voices.

BRICKNASTY

Dublin-based six-piece Bricknasty are flipping the jazz world on its head with their slick hip-hop beats and fearless jamming style. Rapidly becoming one of the most talked about bands in Ireland, Bricknasty emerged from Ballymun at the beginning of 2020 as a lockdown studio project - featuring singer and guitarist Fatboy, Korey Thomas, Louis Younge and Dara Abdurahman. The band combine R&B, hip-hop and an anarchic musical approach that stems from singer Fatboy’s roots in the Balbutcher Lane flats. Catch Bricknasty in the Aula Maxima performing tracks from their critically acclaimed EP Ina Crueler.

WALLIS BIRD

If you've never seen Irish musician Wallis Bird live before, you haven't lived! The Berlin-based artist is renowned for her powerful preforming style, which brings the audience inwards and allows a cathartic atmosphere of musical release to take hold. Catch Wallis offer new songs from her 2022 seventh studio album Hands, her most personal and experimental to date, plus golden oldies this week on Other Voices.

NIAMH REGAN

Galway musician Niamh Regan burst onto the scene with her astonishing 2020 debut album Hemet, and we've been die-hard fans ever since. Performing unreleased material from her forthcoming second record and magical 2023 EP 'In the Meantime' on Other Voices this week, her beautiful honesty and soaring melodies curated a stunning set in UCC's Aula Maxima.

CARDINALS

Rock music is alive and well in Ireland, and Cardinals are an effortlessly cool example of the fresh artistry coming out of Cork. The hometown heroes visit the Glucksman Gallery this week to perform their OV debut. Episode 3 includes a take on their debut single ‘Amsterdam’ and subsequent track ‘The Brow’, which NME recently compared to Echo and the Bunnymen and the scratchy indie of Yo La Tengo.
