Introducing Other Voices Dingle, Derry-Londonderry and London
2012/2013 will see a trio of Other Voices adventures take shape. Welcome to the next chapter: Other Voices Dingle, Derry-Londonderry and London. The recording of the world renowned music television event will take place in St. James’ Church, Dingle, Co. Kerry on December 1st, 2nd and 3rd 2012. The music trail will then lead north in February 2013 for a three day residency at Glassworks in Derry-Londonderry on February 8th, 9th and 10th, celebrating the city’s eminent status as UK Capital of Culture 2013. In April, we journey eastwards bringing Other Voices to the heart of East London for the first time, produced in association with the Barbican.
In keeping with a musical tradition nurtured in Dingle over ten years, this three-part Other Voices road trip will showcase the most influential voices in contemporary music – established artists and bands from across the globe performing alongside the ever burgeoning wave of emerging talent. Old friends will make a return visit and new friendships will be forged. One of those returning to the fold will be Neil Hannon, who will perform at Other Voices in Derry - Londonderry next February: “As an alumni of Other Voices Dingle, it was lovely to receive an invite to appear at Other Voices Derry. Not least because Derry-Londonderry (the city that dare not speak its name) is the city of my birth! It is also the UK City of Culture next year which I am keen to show my support for”. Californian Other Voices veteran Jesca Hoop will also make the journey to Northern Ireland: “I am genuinely excited to play Other Voices this year and am so happy to be invited to play in Derry. I played Other Voices Dingle a couple years back and I can honestly say that it was my years highlight!” The full line-up for each Other Voices adventure will be unveiled in the coming weeks however the producers have confirmed that artists scheduled to make the pilgrimage to Dingle this year include Villagers, Paul Buchanan, SOAK and The Unthanks. The Derry-Londonderry line-up will include Hannon, Hoop plus Django Django, Marina and the Diamonds and many more.
These unique events in Dingle, Derry-Londonderry and London will be gatherings of exceptional live music, once-off collaborations and intimate musical conversations, connected together by the spirit of Other Voices, but each with its own unique accent and sense of place. At the heart of our story is the union of voices: music pays no heed to boundaries or borders. Other Voices will celebrate distinctiveness, diversity, creativity and inclusiveness. This ethos is also reflected in the engagement of new technologies which will platform each assembly and enable music fans around the world to share in the Other Voices tri-experience, with live streaming to local communities, global audiences online and subsequently on television across the world
The Other Voices triangle will forge a new chapter in the musical narrative of these three locations, bringing together a swathe of musical genres and generations, from downright dirty rock’n’roll gangs to celestial traditional music-makers, cutting edge electronic kids to proud warriors of world sounds. Other Voices Dingle, Derry-Londonderry and London will continue to applaud originality and embrace divergence and in doing so, create three very special and authentic celebrations where music remains at the heart of the matter.
Supported by Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Other Voices Dingle will feature the St. James’ recordings over three evenings and Intune Networks will be on hand to provide live streaming from the church in selected Dingle hostelries. The hugely popular Other Voices Music Trail returns and this year’s series will be bigger than ever, with a stellar line-up of musical offerings in a multitude of pubs across Saturday and Sunday. All Other Voices Music Trail events are free and will take place before and after the Church happenings. Familiar names will perform alongside emerging Irish artists and there’s promise of a few very special guests along the way! For the many hundreds that will congregate in the town, this year sees Other Voices hosting Banter, a salon style series of discussion and debate curated by Jim Carroll (www.thisisbanter.com) Also new to this year’s mix, Other Voices has partnered with Deezer UK & Ireland for digital streaming, radio channels and much more. All the content from Other Voices will become part of Deezer's global music experience across 160 countries.
