Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh

Donegal musician Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, born in the Gaeltacht of Gaoth Dobhair, learned her songs and tunes from a family immersed in Irish language and music. Influenced by her father, noted fiddler Francie Mooney, and mother Kitty Rua, a musical household, she, along with siblings Gearóid and Anna, released the album ‘Na Mooneys.’ Mairéad's musical journey began with the timeless recording 'Ceol Aduaidh' in 1983, a precursor to Altan. After her late husband Frankie Kennedy's passing, Altan became a world-renowned Irish traditional band. In 2018, she earned TG4 Gradam Ceoil’s Traditional Musician of the Year. Mairéad also contributes to the Grammy-listed String Sisters and the project 'SíFiddlers' with 13 Donegal-based female fiddlers.

Doireann Ní Ghlacáin

The fiddle player and TV presenter on TG4 studied oral Irish poetry at PhD level in NUIG, with much of her thesis relating to the music studied by her grandfather Seán Ó Riada. The 29-year-old performer grew up in Clontarf and now lives in Clare. From her paternal family, Ní Ghlacáin learnt the fiddle under the tutelage of her father, Kevin Glackin. From her maternal family, Ní Ghlacáin inherited a love of sean-nós singing and has won various awards and competitions in this field.

Now one of traditional music’s emerging young artists, she has travelled the world with her fiddle. The broadcaster has been at the forefront of Irish language broadcasting in her work with TG4, and has toured the world with her fiddle playing in China, The Middle East, all over Europe and America. Doireann recently presented her new multimedia project at the National Concert Hall on October 8th as part of the Tradition Now series. Say a Song combines the worlds of music, literature and technology to breathe new life into the sean nós tradition.

The West Kerry Set

The West Kerry set is known for its powerfully percussive, up-tempo style driven by the region’s dance tunes of polkas and slides. Traditional Irish set dancing is undergoing an unparalleled revival in West Kerry. Driven by Muintir Uí Bheaglaoich, this artistic community is now placing an increased emphasis on Corca Dhuibhne’s traditional dance. A group of set dancers, led by siblings Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich and Méabh Ní Bheaglaoich, have brought the West Kerry set to the national stage. In 2023 the collective performed at Cormac Begley’s sold out solo concert in Vicar Street and the National Concert Hall as part of the Irish Traditional Music Archive’s Drawing from the Well concert. Set-dancing in West Kerry is accompanied by a style of music iconized by Séamus Ó Beaglaoich and Steve Cooney. Séamus’ sons, Eoin and Níall, have taken up the mantle on this energetic and rhythmic style of accompaniment and will be joined by their cousins, guitarist Bréanainn Ó Beaglaoich and Cormac Begley on concertina. Between them, they create an intoxicating rhythmic backdrop unique to this group.
